Services#
L³ offers services ranging from partnerships with academic and non‑profit organizations to client-focused solutions. Below is a list of services.
🔬🧩Research Partnerships and Collaborations#
L³ partners with university researchers and with non‑profit and for‑profit institutions to study a wide range of organisms — including molluscs, crustaceans, and annelids — and is particularly active in projects that benefit from SME participation.
Capabilities include:
Benthic surveys
Testing wood durability against marine wood-boring organisms (Laboratory and field trials)
Assessment of the deterioration of in-service wooden structures by marine wood borers
Evaluation of marine wood-boring hazard in coastal areas prior to the construction of wooden structures
Morphological and molecular identification of specimens
High-quality imaging of specimens ready for publication
Desk studies to collect and synthesize data for mapping species distributions (biogeography)
📊🧬Data Analyses#
L³ can provide a range of data analyses for your data.
Capabilities include:
Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses to assess how variables affect organisms
Alignment of sequences
Comparison of sequences (nucleotide queries) to databases of nucleotide sequences, such as NCBI, using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLASTn)
Molecular-based species delimitation using methods such as Automatic Barcoding Gap Discovery (ABGD), General Mixed Yule-Coalescent (GMYC), and Bayesian Phylogenetics and Phylogeography (BPP).
Species descriptions using morphological and molecular diagnostic characters
Phylogenetic inference, using methods such as Bayesian Inference (BI), Maximum Likelihood (ML), and Neighbour-Joining (NJ)
Molecular diagnostic characters for species descriptions
🖥️🛠️Open-source software for species descriptions#
L³ provides the open‑source software FastaChar free of charge; download it from the software page or GitHub. Alternatively, we can perform the work for you — please get in contact to discuss your project and budget.

🧑🔬🧑💼Workshops#
L³ offers two primary categories of workshops — if you find any of these of interest, kindly reach out.
⏱️Time Management#
Are you constantly battling stress and an overwhelming workload? Do you long for more precious free time? If so, this workshop was designed with you in mind. Rooted in effective methods, this workshop offers valuable and practical tips to optimise your time utilisation.
📝Scientific Writing#
The final step in the scientific process involves disseminating our discoveries to the wider scientific community and beyond. Typically, novel findings are communicated through articles published in scientific journals. Publishing your findings is of utmost importance — L³ provides guidelines on how to write clear and concise articles and get them published.
Bespoke Projects#
Every project is unique and may require a tailored approach to address specific needs. If you would like to discuss a project, explore potential collaboration, or subscribe to a workshop, get in touch
